August 29, 2020
Dear Porter Families,
We would like to welcome you to our new school year! We are very excited about starting the school year with our students this Monday, August 31st online. We have sent emails out letting you know who your child’s teacher is and outlining how to connect with them during our Family Welcome Week. Thank you for your patience as we got out that important information and please contact us if you have not received any information in regards to your child’s teacher. You may also go to this link to see the class lists for each grade-level: Class Lists
Starting Monday, your child will be connecting with their teacher everyday during the Family Welcome Week to build relationships and help them transition back into their new school year. These check-in meetings will take place between 9AM-11AM daily. Please refer to the information posted by your child’s teacher for the specific time and meeting information necessary for everyone to connect. We want you to know that we are here to support you and your child as we begin our school year together in this capacity.
During our Family Welcome Week, the district has provided pre-recorded parent training modules that are available to help you support your child’s online learning. Please see this link to log into the online learning platform: Parent Learning Menu. This week everyone will have the opportunity to learn and prepare together for online learning. Students will also be completing independent learning modules and teachers will be providing them with the link when they meet together next week. I would like you to know that our dedicated teachers and staff have been working tirelessly to prepare the online daily schedule for their students, engaging lessons, and aligning a rigorous curriculum that continues to ensure that their students benefit from a rich experience during online learning. We have been also working hard on creating complimentary “supply kits” full of materials that your child will be able to use during their online classes. We have passed out materials to our TK-2nd graders and will be finishing up distribution later next week for our 3rd-5th graders. We will send out that information as soon as we have that prepared for our families. As you can see, we have been working hard to coordinate many different components which are new to all of us as we navigate through opening our school during the current health pandemic. Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work diligently to ensure a successful year for all of our students. At Porter, we are continuing our work on ensuring we are providing a safe, collaborative, and inclusive culture for our students, families, and community. Furthermore, as a district we are focusing on our students’ social and emotional wellbeing and ensuring an equitable learning experiences for ALL of our students.
During the first week, teachers will be creating welcoming activities and building a culture of community in their classrooms. Building positive relationships is extremely important in order for our students to engage in the learning process. We want our students to feel supported and valued as an important member of the classroom community. Starting on September 8th, teachers will begin following the schedule that they will be providing to you. Your child will be meeting with their teacher daily to engage in interactive online learning classes. We will take attendance every day, so if your child will be absent please contact the teacher.
We value your partnership and we are committed to providing your child with optimal learning experiences while we are conducting online learning. We will work through this time together and even though the beginning of this school year looks very different compared to any other, we are committed to providing our students with a safe learning environment, enriching educational experiences, and a place where everyone is accepted and valued. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. We will be planning for grade-level virtual Back to School Nights in the next few weeks and we look forward to seeing you there!
The entire Porter team is excited to welcome your child back to the 2020/2021 school year. We are here to support our students and our families and to make this a successful year. Please reach out if you have additional questions.
Thank you and take Care,
Mrs. Chavez
